Midsummer Thrush Music – Dawn and Dusk

In my never-ending quest to experience, record and share premium thrush soundscapes, I once again strike gold in my beloved Shindagin Hollow, capturing exquisite thrush concerts at both dawn and dusk: Go here for the story behind this recording.

Celestial Music?

In early July of 2016, I recorded Hermit Thrushes and White-throated Sparrows singing at first light at Spring Pond Bog in the Adirondack Mountains. I was disappointed with the recording for reasons I will explain, and I almost threw it away. But upon further examination, I was shocked to discover that I had actually captured a soundscape worthy of considerable praise and admiration. GO HERE for the story behind this recording.

Thrush Dripscape

It is dawn in midsummer after a night of rain. Drip falls from the treetops, splatting against leaves and the ground. Wood Thrushes sound off in the distance and a lone cricket trills. Such an exalted mix, a magical elixir that helps calm one’s mind. GO HERE for the story behind this recording.

Wild Burros of Picacho (with Coyote Finale)

In early April, we travel to the remote Picacho State Recreation Area located along the Colorado River, about 25 miles north of Yuma, Arizona. We camp next to Taylor Lake, which is ringed with extensive marshes. At night, wild burros sound off, their whining brays echoing across the landscape. Finally, two coyotes suddenly erupt, their ecstatic howls and tremolos ushering in the dawn. Go here for the story behind this recording.

Coyote Reverberations

It is late summer in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. As night unfolds, crickets trill, their songs mesmerizing and tranquil. Then, without warning, Coyotes howl and yip, their reverberant echos reaching out in all directions. Exhilarating, intoxicating wild music, flowing deeply into the recesses of our minds. Turkey Roost

It is early May in Aravaipa Canyon. Well before first light, I quietly place my microphone under a towering cottonwood tree, the nighttime roost of a flock of Wild Turkeys. As dawn unfolds, the turkeys awaken, calling excitedly from the tree limbs. Such a delight … a potpourri of yelps, gobbles, and purts! Go here for the story behind this recording.

Wind, Ravens, Reeds

At first light, I hike into Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. Gusty wind blows through a dense thicket of stiff reeds, producing a plethora of snaps, crackles and pops. Frolicking ravens croak repeatedly as they fly up and down the Rio Grande River, their calls echoing off the steep cliffs above. Go Here for the story behind this recording.

Winter Rain

It is the middle of the winter in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. Cold rain falls on the wet, snow-covered ground. After dark, we hike into deep forest, where we enjoy the ticks and splats of the raindrops landing all around. GO HERE for the story behind this recording.

Coyote Moon

Without warning, a lone coyote gives a long drawn-out howl from the hill above, and then another joins in from a different direction, its higher pitched howls sliding upward in tone. Then the two break into a lively exchange, their excited calls interweaving, overlapping, and echoing through the thick forest. Go Here for the story behind this recording.
