ELF OWL CHATTERINGS: Elf Owls calling at night from a mesquite flat next to the Rio Grande River, near Cottonwood Campground, Big Bend National Park, Texas. Recorded by Lang Elliott. 11pm, 14 March 2017. An individual gives repeated calls and then is joined by another, at which time you will hear excited and continuous calling.
ELF OWLS are commonly heard during the night at the Cottonwood Campground. Their squeaky trills and chatters are a pleasure to behold, especially if one knows that North America's tiniest owl (less than 6" long; hardly bigger than a sparrow) is responsible. I had to go exploring to find a quiet spot where campers would not be heard snoring or making other intrusive sounds.
